1. a metal ring or cap put around the end of a cane, wooden handle, umbrella, or the like, for strength and protection. The metal band holding the eraser in a pencil is a ferrule.
2. a ring-shaped bushing to protect the end of a pipe or tube.
–v.t.
to furnish with a ferrule. Also, ferule.
